Dollars Per Hour Chapter 20

“Hi, sir, can I speak with Maria please?”

    “Whozis?”

“Sir, my name is Rubin. I’m calling from SpectraCom regarding her service. Is she there?”

    “Why are you calling?”

“It’s a personal business matter that I can only release to Maria or her husband if she has one.”

    “What is it?”

“Again, I can only release that information to her or her husband if she has one.”

“What is it? Why you calling?”

    “Are you her husband, sir?”

    “Close enough.”

“What do you mean, 'close enough?' You either are or you aren’t. It’s not an issue with any grey areas; it’s pretty much cut and dry. It’s yes or no. Either you are married, or you're not married. There is no in between, either black or white.”

    “I’m her man.”

“And what entails being ‘her man?’ Is there a certificate that says ‘marriage license’ on it?”

    “I’m her man.”

    “Are you her husband?”

    “I’m her man.”

“Are you married to Maria Lawton? It’s a yes-or-no question, sir. I’m speaking in plain English and asking for a one-word answer. Can you do that for me? Are you married to her?”

    “No.”

“Then, sir, I’m afraid you are not close enough. I can’t give you any information regarding the nature of this call, sir. Put Maria on the phone please.”

“Not until you tell me what it’s about.”

“And if you were listening, you would have heard me say that I can’t.”

“If you want to talk to her, you’d better talk to me. I make the decision if it’s something she needs to hear.”

“You’re not very bright, are you?”

“What did you just ask me?”

“I said it sounds like you are a very stupid man. Am I correct in that assertion?”

“You piece of shit! How dare you? Let me speak to your supervisor!”

“No, we’re not going to be doing that.”

“Did you just refuse a customer your supervisor?”

“No, I refused you a supervisor. We have already determined that you are not a customer, remember? Probably not. You strike me as kind of dumb.”

“You wait until someone hears about this! You’re through, you fucking piece of shit!”
