Dollars Per Hour Chapter 34

“What do you mean, you can’t get my phone on today? I was promised that it would be on!”

“Mr. Davis, I didn’t say it would be on today; it might be. It just takes up to 48 business hours to restore. I will put through the order and see that it’s done. That’s the best I can promise you.”

    “That’s not good enough.”

“Mr. Davis, I’m sorry, but that will have to be good enough. There isn’t anyone here who can offer you better and be honest about it.”

“Get the owner on the phone right now.”

    “You want a supervisor?”

“That’s not what I said. Dig the wax out of your ears, you little faggot. I said I want to talk to the owner.”

“You want to talk to the owner?”

    “Yes.”

    “The owner of SpectraCom?”

    “Yes.”

“You are aware that SpectraCom is a huge, multinational corporation, aren’t you? It’s not just a local thing. You are aware, right, that I’m in New York, and you are in Michigan, right?”

    “Yes.”

“I don’t even know where the owner–which would be the stockholders, not one single person–would be located. But you want to speak with... Well, for argument’s sake, we’ll say the CEO?”

“Yes, as high as it goes. That’s who I need to talk to.”

“Mr. Davis, are you aware that your request is laughable?”

    “What?”

“Also, if news of this were to ever reach the CEO, he would laugh too.”

    “What?”

“The CEO of SpectraCom, whose name I don’t even know, is a very busy man, Mr. Davis. He doesn’t have time to get on the phone because you didn’t pay your bill for four months; what did you think was going to happen?”

    “How dare you...”

“How dare I? How dare you call up and argue with me? You can’t take responsibility for your own actions, and you want to take it out on me? That’s just inappropriate.”

“Put your supervisor on the phone right now!”
