Dollars Per Hour Chapter 67

“You have to! You have to turn my phone on today! I can’t wait all weekend! This just isn’t fair!”

“Mr. Leeds, I’m sorry, but at this point, there isn’t anything we can do. Service can only be entered in for restoral during business hours on the East Coast. Your credit card payment won’t be posted until tomorrow. It’s 6:30 right now. Even in an emergency situation, the time-frame for restoral of your service would be exactly the same.”

“You don’t understand, I can’t take this! You have to do something!”

“Mr. Leeds, please, there is no need to cry. Your service will go back on. You just need to be patient.”

“Oh fuck you! Fuck you and fuck being patient! Do you understand what I’m going through? I’m going to fucking kill myself! I’ve had enough of this!”

“Sir... Sir... Mr. Leeds, just hold on a moment, maybe there is something I can do for you, let me just see.”

“Okay... Thank you, I knew it.”

“All right, take a few deep breaths, try to stop crying, and I’ll be right back.”

    (Sob) “Okay.”

    “...911, what is your emergency?”

“Hi, my name is Rubin Valentine, and I work for SpectraCom Financial Services. I need some help, I don’t know what to do here.”

“Rubin, just tell me what’s wrong.”

“I have a customer on the line, Charles Leeds, who has become frantic and is threatening suicide. I’m worried that he may actually do it.”

    “And what is the address?”

“Four-sixteen Woods Lane, Buffalo, New York.”

“All right, let me dispatch a car.”

“All right, can you hold just a moment while I check back with him?”

    “Yes, go ahead.”

    “Mr. Leeds?”

“Yes? Yes? What have you found?”

“I’m talking to some people about your issue.”

“Tell them that if it doesn’t go back on, I’m going to fucking kill myself!”

“I did, they are fully aware.”

    “Good.”

“All right now. Hold just a moment while I get back with them... Hello, 911?”

“Yes, is Mr. Leeds still there?”

“Yes, but he’s still talking about suicide. Oh, man, you’ve got to help me; I really think he’s going to do it.”

“Okay, there is a car on the way to his home. They should be there in just a few minutes. Continue talking to the customer until they arrive.”

“I’ll come back to you when they get there... Mr. Leeds?”

    “Yes.”

“Someone is coming to take care of your issue. They wanted me to just keep talking to you until they arrived.”

    “Okay.”

“Don’t worry, Mr. Leeds. We’ll get this taken care of.”

“You’re going to get my phone on?”

“We’ll get this taken care of; don’t worry. The important thing is to keep calm. We’re going above my head on this. If there is anything that can be done to help you, we’ll find a way.”

    “Okay, good.”

“So just take it easy, get your composure, try to stop crying, and everything will be all right.”

“Good... I knew you could help... Uh... Hold on one moment, there is someone at the door.”

“All right, go ahead and answer that.”

    (muffled) “Wh... what the hell?”

    (Shuffling. Muffled indistinct voices.)

    “Mr. Valentine?”

    “Yes?”

“This is Officer Roseland of the Buffalo PD. How are you sir?”

“I’m all right, is Mr. Leeds all right?”

“Yes, he’s okay. We got here in time. We’ll take care of everything. You can go ahead and report to the 911 operator now. She will need to ask you some questions.”

    “All right. Thank you, Officer.”
