Two Winters Past

Scene 16

EXT. FOREST.

GRANT, POPPER, and VALENTINE stand over the monster corpse.

GRANT: Let’s go before the Lembeks show up.

VALENTINE: How much further is this store room.

GRANT: Other side of the hill. It’s the foundation to an old building they covered over with boards and dirt. Been storing in there for years. Got so much in there, they don’t even know I been taking it!

VALENTINE: Do they live near by?

GRANT: Close enough we can get in and out without much notice. This was your idea, going back. Anyone shows up, you ain’t selling us out, or I’ll shoot you myself. Understand?

VALENTINE: Sure. Sure, let’s just not get caught. Can you give me a place to stay for the night?

GRANT: If you can carry enough nuts that I don’t eat them all on the way back, you can sleep in my sister’s bed, and she’ll probably sleep there with you!

POPPER: It’s Valentine, right?

VALENTINE: Yeah, and you’re Popper and Grant?

POPPER: Val... can I call you Val? There was something I’ve been meaning to do since before we found you. I hope you won’t think anything less of me.

VALENTINE: Sure, what’s up?

POPPER points up the hill.

POPPER: Hey Grant, what’s that?

GRANT shields his eyes and tries to see.

GRANT: What is it? Another zombie?

VALENTINE: They’re not zombies!

POPPER shoots Grant in the back and turns the gun on VALENTINE.

FADE TO BLACK.

FADE IN.

Wide angle panning along the expanse of a field sprouting with wheat. One room wooden shack comes into frame at the forest line. Morning sun beats the field, but shack is under shade of the trees. An old man sits on the front step. He is HAZARD. He is asleep with his head down, arms crossed on his chest. Music fades as camera continues to pan and zoom in on HAZARD’s face. He is snoring lightly. Crickets can be heard and butterflies are flickering around the trees beyond. Camera reaches closeup and a footstep in the underbrush snaps HAZARD’s eyes open. HAZARD’s eyes go back and forth. Camera zooms out to full-length shot as HAZARD stands and picks up a pitch fork that is leaning against the side of the shack.

Intercut scenes of HAZARD walking around the shack. In scenes where he approaches camera, he is holding pitchfork, but in scenes looking over HAZARD’s shoulder into the woods, there is no pitchfork. Violin music plays, beating on each hesitant step HAZARD takes between trees. Forest is dark and alive with sound.

HAZARD: Who out there?

Birds sing as HAZARD scans the vegetation. He holds the pitchfork.

HAZARD: Anybody there?

HAZARD waits for an answer that doesn’t come.

HAZARD walks back to the front of shack. In this sequence, he carries the pitchfork in all shots. HAZARD leans pitchfork against shack and sits. He crosses his arms and leans the chair back against the wall.

Zoom in tight, HAZARD is motionless a few moments until he opens his eyes to more footsteps, louder now. HAZARD sits up straight, looks around.

HAZARD: I heard you, motherfucker. Come on out here. Got some nice, juicy arms and legs for you to chew on!

HAZARD reaches for pitchfork, but it is gone.

HAZARD: What the fuck? Okay, who’s out there? Shane? Billy? This ain’t funny.

HAZARD walks a circle around the shack. No one is there and the pitchfork is missing.

HAZARD: All right, knock it off! Carry? If that’s you, I’m gonna whip your ass, you hear?

HAZARD enters shed.

INT. SHED.

Shed has been divided into 2 rooms. A cot is visible in one with a rumpled sleeping bag on top. HAZARD enters the second room, which has a table and a metal chair.

HAZARD takes a gun from a drawer in the desk.

HAZARD steps outside, REMMY enters from cover. He is a giant with wiry black hair and beard. He holds the pitchfork. REMMY stabs HAZARD in the neck.

HAZARD thrashes wildly, but no sound comes out but a choking gasp.

HAZARD beats the shaft of the pitchfork, but REMMY is much stronger.

REMMY forces HAZARD into the shack, pinning HAZARD against the wall until he is quiet.

Final shot looking up at bloodspattered REMMY. He releases pitchfork. It sways, but stays erect. REMMY smiles and lets out a grunt of a laugh. Cue heavy metal.

CUT TO BLACK.
