CLAY
You should have seen Dad’s eyes light up when they called him about the piano. We were up north for a few weeks, and Dad was moping around the house like he always does when he can’t get in the water. A construction worker recognized our name on the plate of the piano when the Capitol Theater was being prepared for demolition. Dad had almost nothing to do with the company, but Link simulators were big business in Binghamton. Our name was on walls all over town. The piano came from Grandpa’s factory over on Water Street. It’s a parking lot now. Dad didn’t even take the call when the factory was being demolished, but when he heard about the piano, he grabbed me by the arm and dragged me down to figure out how we would get it back to the house without Mom finding out.
ED
This piano must have sat in a closet for fifty years.
CLAY
He spent months tinkering with that thing, for hours at a time, but he just couldn’t get it back into working order. He started pushing it back in the corner of his office and pulled it out when we came home for the winter. He told us for the longest time he was still working on it. When Mom decided the piano had gone long enough without moving she threw a sheet and some flowers on it. I didn’t even know he still had that thing until that day we graduated.
