Boonville

Scene 4

INT. BAR. NIGHT

Classic rock plays over the scene.

Open on a bar table with four men in conversation. Between them are an array of baskets with brown fried food. All have beers. We can clearly read the word “SUNSET” on one of their shirts.

Pan to a nearby empty table. Enter TRAVIS. He has a pitcher of beer. DANNY joins him a moment later with a two pints. The sit.

As they talk, we can see the bar around them. All stools at the bar are taken, but most of the tables are empty. A few people play pool in the back.

TRAVIS: This where everyone comes on a Wednesday?

DANNY: This is where everyone comes, every night. This is the only place that is open past 8.

Danny pours drinks. She drinks hers quickly through the scene, refilling several times while Travis only drinks 1.

DANNY: You can go to Rome, but it’s really only worth the drive on the weekend. There is more going on in Syracuse, but that’s about twice as far. I hope you didn’t come here thinking Boonville was the most exciting place in the world.

TRAVIS: (chuckles)  I came for some quiet.

DANNY: You’re from Colorado?

TRAVIS: I was in the Rockies a few years, but I needed to get back to the East Coast. Before that I was down in Florida, then up in Canada. When I was a kid I lived up in Maine, but there have been a lot of places in between.

DANNY: Wow.

TRAVIS: Trouble finds me.

DANNY: So you’re not going to be in Boonville long?

NIKKI and CORRINE enter. They are attractive girls in their 20’s, who immediately turn heads in a place like this. They go to the bar.

DANNY watches after them a moment.

DANNY: Those are the girls you want to meet in Boonville.

TRAVIS: Friends of yours?

DANNY: Corrine was in my sister’s grade, but no. Hell no. Nikki works in town, and Corrine is just rich. They’ll never leave this place.

TRAVIS: And they don’t know you, even though you hang out in the same bar.

DANNY: When my band is up on stage rocking out the brains of the world, both of those girls will say, “God damn, Danielle McBride was such a great friend!”

TRAVIS: You have a band?

DANNY: I don’t have a band. I’m learning guitar though.

TRAVIS: Drinking beer alone with a grizzled old man can’t be doing any favors to your image.

Insert of Nikki and Corrine talking to two young men. They all look at DANNY and TRAVIS, but try to be inconspicuous.

TRAVIS: They’re trying not to look at you.

DANNY: It’s you. Everybody wants to know about the new guy.

TRAVIS: There’s not so much glamour.
