Two Winters Past

EXT. DEPOSIT. NIGHT.

Downpour so heavy the scene appears to be shot through a scrim.

WIDE: Looking straight down showing both sides of the Deposit wall. Focus on LOGAN, far to the right of the frame. He is climbing a ladder, holding his scythe-sword. The Deposit wall is beaten but not broken. Scratched and dented car chassis are exposed. Catwalk is gone. A few dangling 2x4’s and a tangle of debris at the bottom that all that remain. Several Barabas are slamming ladders against the wall to follow LOGAN. There are not enough men for a defense. Already several Damascan squads have put up ladders and warriors are climbing.

LOGAN strikes at the first Damascan to crest the wall, striking the warrior in the neck with the scythe-blade sword.

Blood fans from the wound.

Damascan falls from the ladder, but another is climbing up to take his place.

More Barabas have reached the top, and are engaging the Damascans with spears and hand weapons.

The difference in technology is marked. Barabas are fighting with improvised weapons crafted from garden tools. Damascans have weapons crafted for war. These are pounded spear heads and beaten swords.

LOGAN kills another Damascan. We travel with his body as it drops off the ladder, scrapes along the jagged metal Deposit wall, and lands on the shell of shields below.

Barabas near LOGAN takes an arrow to the face and falls.

LOGAN is momentarily distracted, giving a Damascan warrior opportunity to lunge up the ladder and grapple.

LOGAN loses his balance and falls back, pulling the Damascan with him.

They land in a pile of debris. LOGAN lands flat on his back and cries out.

Damascan sits up. A nail has stuck a board to his shoulder. Damascan opens his mouth to shout, but a spear is thrust in from OS and stabs Damascan in the throat.

Barabas helps LOGAN to his feet, pulling him out of the fray.

LOGAN: I’m okay! I can walk!

LOGAN winces, but is able to walk. In the background 5 ladders are up with Barabas at the top fighting hand-to-hand. The last of the Barabas are here pressed against this section of wall beneath them, waiting for their turn to climb. There may be 40 fighters.

We do not see the face, only the barrel of the rifle at the top of the Deposit wall. It fires with a puff of smoke.

JUMP CUT: to the Damascan tortoise that has formed beneath the ladders of the fighting man. Extended echo of the gunshot. The squad was planting explosives. The bullet is a lucky shot.

WIDE: in a yellow flash, the entire Damascan squad, the Barabas above them, and that section of wall are obliterated.

Debris and shrapnel spray the field, shredding Barabas and Damascan alike.

LOGAN is knocked down.

A horrid silence follows the blast. Only the distant lights have not been extinguished. Battlefield has fallen in darkness.

LOGAN sits, trying to stand. We see barely more than his white outline from the moon.

CLOSEUP: LOGAN’s eyes, reflecting moonlight and wide with disbelief.

WIDE: We see the gaping hole in the Deposit wall. Nothing remains, like a tooth socket, with raw, jagged metal on either side. We are looking over LOGAN’s shoulder as he stares into the void outside.

A road flare ignites. It is Mehemet, on a horse. On either side of him, more flares ignite, illuminating the charging front line of Damascus.

MED SHOT: SLOW-MO PAN across the Damascan line. They run in close formation, massed together now, mouths agape, swords raised above their heads. All this is lit in red by the torches. First we hear no sound through the rain then we hear their terrible wail, fading in louder until they are a great roar.

A few courageous BARABAS have reached the breach and are firing their rifles and arrows into the horde, but it is not enough to make any difference.

LOGAN rips the cross from his chest and picks up a sword.

LOGAN: Barabas has fallen! Barabas lives!

WIDE: Pan across the Deposit yard. The Barabas have assembled as a loose mob in the yard behind LOGAN, who is the subject of focus as the camera passes him. No more than 20 Barabas remain.

SLOW: LOGAN’s mouth opens in a muted scream as he raises his sword and lurches forward into a charge. Rain comes down in an almost solid sheet, pooling on the ground, splattering, creating mud.

LOGAN charges. Barabas raise their weapons and follow.

Reverse perspectives to the Damascans as they surge forth into the breach. Men on the outside are shoved into the jagged metal of former cars destroyed by the blast.

Deposit has been overrun. Camera rises above the raging battle, looking down into the fray of bobbing heads and flashing blades. Zoom out, camera raising up, until all we can see is falling rain, and then nothing.

The screams of the dying continues for some time.

Two Winters Past

INT. GAS STATION. NIGHT.

CHLOE ISIS runs.

VALENTINE raises his machete, but is tackled by RANGO.

MOLAY grabs RANGO’s hair and pulls his head back.

MOLAY is about to cut Rango’s throat, but TIP pinions MOLAY’s arms.

TIP: I ain’t going to kill you here, Jack, they gonna want to talk to you in Triangle. They gonna wanna know about this kid that says he killed Remmy Cooley!

RANGO has VALENTINE pinned to the ground.

RANGO: What about the girl?

TIP: Cooleys got enough women. We find her, we’ll keep her. If not, she’ll be dead soon enough. I know some horney bikers that won’t care if they’re raping a lady or these purdy lil boys here.

Cut to:

EXT. GAS STATION. NIGHT.

VALENTINE and MOLAY are being tied behind the motorcycles. They have been beaten more.

RANGO: What are we going to do about Duke?

TIP: Shash his bike inside. I’ll send a couple kids down in the morning. You boys ready to walk?

VALENTINE: Let us go, please.

TIP: (laughs) Ain’t that some crazy talk!

TIP starts his bike. MOLAY’s hands are tied. TIP drives. MOLAY stumbles immediately.

VALENTINE is tied behind Rango’s bike.

RANGO: I’ll try to be nicer.

RANGO drives. VALENTINE has to run to keep up.

Cut to:

EXT. DIRT ROAD.

Motorcycles drive into shot.

VALENTINE falls and is dragged shortly before the bike stops.

POV watching the exchange from the brush.

TIP: You boys want some water or something?

RANGO: Give me another mile, Tip. I’ll have to piss like a racehorse.

TIP and RANGO laugh and drive away. VALENTINE and MOLAY stumble behind as best they can.

INT. QUARANTINE ROOM. NIGHT.

Bed has been fixed, KAY sits upon it. She is slightly relaxed, but pulls herself into a ball when BLYTHE enters.

BLYTHE looks at an empty plate of beans on the table.

BLYTHE: You ate. That’s good.

BLYTHE sits.

BLYTHE: Are you feeling better?

KAY does not respond.

BLYTHE: The Doctor said you let him look you over? He’s a good man, isn’t he?

KAY: He took blood.

BLYTHE: Yeah… he told me.

KAY: I want to leave here. I don’t want to stay.

BLYTHE: You will, don’t worry.

KAY: Now. I want to leave now.

BLYTHE: I can’t let you go now. It’s dark. It’s cold. You’ll die of exposure before dawn.

KAY: Or I die here with you psychos.

BLYTHE: Come on, Kay, we’re friends. You trusted me to come here, why don’t you trust me now?

KAY: You never said I would be your prisoner. You said life would be better.

BLYTHE: It is better…

KAY: Then why won’t you let me out? The doctor said I could go when he knew I wasn’t infected. He said he would know by the blood. He knew about the worm!

BLYTHE: He told me about the worm.

KAY: Vic had a worm! It was huge! Miranda pulled it out of his head, and it wiggled! I saw it wiggle before she stepped on it!

KAY grow wild, screaming and pounding the cot. BLYTHE attempts to comfort her.

BLYTHE: Hey! Hey now, be here with me. Right here with me.

KAY: Why hasn’t he let me go?

BLYTHE: When Sprague looked at your blood, he found worms. He found a lot of worms.

KAY begins crying.

BLYTHE: The worms were all dead though. All of them. He says he can’t find any living worms, like your body is killing them! He says with as many worms as he saw, you should have turned into a ripper a long time ago. For some reason, your body is killing the worms.

KAY: Why?

BLYTHE: Sprague doesn’t know, but he wants you to help him.

KAY: (suspicious) He wants to study me?

BLYTHE: Kay, if you’re immune, this is important.

KAY: No. No, I want to go. I want to go now. Let me go now!

BLYTHE: Kay, come on, you can’t go now. Stay until morning. You can’t go now, it’s not safe in the dark.

Two Winters Past

EXT. DEPOSIT. NIGHT.

Rain is growing heavier.

We see MEHEMET and a handful of troops lit in the harsh red glow of a road flare.

MEHEMET lifts a horn to his lips and blows a hellish note.

From the darkness comes the shudder of booted feet pounding lockstep. Buckles jingle, shields are smashed, and the chanting begins again. The moonlight is faint, and we see only shadows moving, drawing close until the front ranks come into the light of the flare.

Damascansn are armed with irregular weapons, spears, swords, axes, metal-headed clubs. Front rows maintain a shield wall.

Ranks break as teams come through with aluminum ladders. Ladder teams take position behind the shield wall.

TARTELL: Fire!

ARROWS fall harmlessly on the shield wall as the men below it slowly advance to the walls of Deposit.

Cavalry open fire with rifles from horseback, driving the BARABAS to cover behind the cars.

Arrows feather the shield wall with little effect. Damascans reach the Deposit wall.

Barabas hurl down rocks that are stopped by raised shields.

SOUND EFFECT: WILHELM SCREAM.

Damascan warrior is struck by a rock and falls.

Another Tortoise forms from the Damascan ranks on the left flank, and then on the right.

LOGAN: (To men in the yard) Get more rocks up here!

Barabas pass large rocks and broken pavement up the ladders to be thrown down by Barabas on the wall.

Catwalks strain.

Ladders crack.

The structure holds.

TARTELL: Crack that shell!

Three Damascan squads have reached the wall, and at least fifty men are sheltered at the base of the Deposit wall.

TARTELL: What are they doing?

Damascans lay three racks of ladders and retreat.

At a safe distance, soldiers cast aside their shields and run.

CLOSEUP: Realization dawns on LOGAN’s face.

LOGAN: Explosives!

A few men have luck enough to jump. LOGAN is half way down the ladder when the bomb goes off.

Blast obliterates all sound but a persistent ringing. The blast is over before we realize, but the next few moments happen in slow motion.

Barabas are scrambling about, screaming, some badly injured. For a moment, camera focuses on a Barabas warrior with one arm blown away. He stares in horror at the wound.

INTERCUT with LOGAN, on the ground, looking about confused at the chaos.

LOGAN  regains his composure.

LOGAN: Get up! Get up! God damn it! Get ladders on those walls! Someone get me a sword!

A weapon handed to LOGAN is crafted from the blade of a scythe. Several other soldiers are armed with these ad hoc weapons.

A few ladders are already on hand. They are slammed against the damaged section of wall and Barabas scramble up. LOGAN climbs a ladder.

LOGAN squints against the rain, which has started coming down hard.

LOGAN: Get some spears up here! The sharp ones!

Two Winters Past

INT. GAS STATION.LATE AFTERNOON.

MOLAY is frying slices of Spam on the grill. VALENTINE is eating. MOLAY offers CHLOE ISIS a slice.

CHLOE ISIS takes it.

CHLOE ISIS: I didn’t eat meat. Not before.

VALENTINE: We’ve got no other food. You need to eat something.

CHLOE ISIS: I’I still try to avoid when I can. It’s less often than I’d like.

VALENTINE: The Lembeks were growing corn?

CHLOE ISIS: Yeah, corn, but they also had pigs, and pigs eat a lot of corn.

VALENTINE: I can’t believe they had those fields. How did they do that with no tractors?

CHLOE ISIS: Shit, they probably had the old plows still in the barns. Country people don’t throw shit away. Harness it to a horse or a cow and whip the shit out of it. Lembeks ain’t that big a loss to the world either.

MOLAY: I think I saw a few packages of salted nuts over in the store.

CHLOE ISIS stares at the ground with her arms crossed.

CHLOE ISIS: That’s worth a look.

CHLOE ISIS exits without looking at either.

MOLAY: You met Chloe only yesterday?

VALENTINE: This guy named Popper found me out in the woods, and then those Cooleys came trying to kill him. They were driving those cannibals into the farm house.

MOLAY: My friend says he witnessed the same thing, but no one wants to believe him.

VALENTINE: Good thing you know how to stop all this.

MOLAY: Hey man, I know you don’t believe me, but I’m telling you the truth. The Old Ones, the eldritch things, they’re real. Look around, we’ve got a world overrun with zombies. What turned off the electricity?

VALENTINE: I don’t give a shit.

MOLAY: Then why are you out here? You’ve been running around the woods for days with no protection and an empty rifle.

VALENTINE: I’ve done what I had to do to survive. Don’t you call me soft.

MOLAY: I didn’t call you soft...

OS CHLOE ISIS screams. VALENTINE draws his machete.

MOLAY puts his hand on his sword.

CHLOE ISIS backs into the kitchen with her hands raised.

Three TRIANGLES enter pointing shotguns. They wear biker leather and have long beards. They are TIP, RANGO, and DUKE.

TIP: Looks like quite the little picnic. Got anything for me?

RANGO and DUKE laugh.

RANGO: No fucking shit! Isn’t that Blythe’s buddy?

DUKE: Ha! The sissy with the sword!

MOLAY: Put the shotguns down and I’ll show you a sissy.

TIP: Like that, wouldn’t you?

RANGO: Well fuck, Tip, maybe he can tell us where Drake’s bike went to.

TIP: I’m going to stomp his fucking head in, that’s what I’m going to do.

TIP slugs MOLAY in the jaw, knocking him down.

CHLOE ISIS screams. DUKE points a shotgun in VALENTINE’s face.

VALENTINE: Leave us alone!

DUKE: Or what? What are you going to do? Sword-boy is on the ground, and you just got that little chopper that ain’t even getting through my jacket. Not with you swinging at least!

VALENTINE: I killed Remmy Cooley with this machete. You know him? I killed his brother too. Hacked them both to pieces.

TIP: Bull shit. Little fucker ain’t getting close to Remmy Cooley. That redneck is mean!

MOLAY: It’s true. Cooleys been attacked. Zombies knocked down their wall.

VALENTINE: Those Cooleys will want me.

MOLAY: You’ll have to take us.

Faster than anyone can process, MOLAY leaps on the counter, draws his sword, jumps the grill and plunges the blade into DUKE’s stomach.

TIP tries to shoot, but MOLAY turns the corpse to take the fire and then shoves Duke into TIP.

MOLAY: Run! Back door!
