Dollars Per Hour Chapter 41

“Thank you for calling SpectraCom, my name is Rubin, can I have your ten-digit phone number, please?”

   “215 555 2111"

“Thank you, hold for one moment while I access your account... Thank you for holding. Could you please verify your name and address for security purposes?”

“Shawna Dailor, 37 Walnut St., Philly.”

“Thank you, Ms Dailor, I’m showing a balance on your account of $75.82. Would you like to pay that today by check or credit card?”

    “I have nothing!”

“Well, ma’am, your account is past due in the amount of $33.71. Do you know when you will be able to take care of at least this portion?”

“Didn’t you hear me? I have nothing!”

“Well, ma’am, do you have any idea when you will be able to take care of this?”

    “Oh, I hate you men!”

    “Excuse me, ma’am?”

“You’re all the same. You got me into this mess!”

    “What mess would that be?”

“I have nothing! It was all taken by some man!”

“Well, Ms. Dailor, I assure you, I am uninvolved with the situation. I just work for your phone company. I’m here to help you.”

“What do you want me to do?!”

“Well, to secure your account, we need to receive some kind of payment...”

“Aren’t you listening? I have nothing! He left me and took everything. He took all my money! He even took my food! I have nothing!”

“Well, Ms. Dailor, we’re not inflexible. I can work out a payment plan with you...”

“I have nothing! Don’t you understand me? He took everything! Where am I supposed to get this money? Does SpectraCom want me to go out and lie down with some man for their money?”

“Ma’am, I suggested nothing of the sort. Now, for a payment as low as eight dollars, I can stretch the rest of it out for six...”

“I have nothing! He even took my food! I have a box of macaroni! I have nothing! Oh, I hate you men!”

“Ms. Dailor, there’s no need to cry. We can work with you on this. Right now, your phone isn’t even scheduled for block or suspension, so you have some time. Your situation isn’t that bad with us. We can handle this. I just need you to work with me, okay? I can’t change what happened to you, but I can help you ease at least one burden, okay?”

    (Sob) “Okay.”

“Now, regardless of anything, and I’m sorry about your situation, but setting up a payment arrangement does require that payment posts to your account within 12 days. The lowest I can make this is eight dollars...”

    “I have nothing!”
