Dollars Per Hour Chapter 64

“Why did you block my line? What right do you have to block it?”

“Well, Sir, we do reserve the right to block service with no notification. I’m showing here that our Fraud Department is actually the department that blocked this line though, not Financial Services.”

“And what right do they have to say who I can and can’t call? What are they, a morality squad?”

“Well, they have their own reasons for applying blocks. I’m not able to tell you why. It says here the block was placed due to your use of 900 numbers.”

“Yeah, what right do they have? I’m an adult. I can pick and choose who I call and when. If I choose to call an adult phone service, who does SpectraCom think they are to tell me I can’t?!”

“Well, Sir, this block was placed by Fraud; you will have to speak with them about it. The reason your call was directed to this department is the past due balance on your account. Financial Services, my department, has scheduled a block on your line in three days. Only part of your long distance is blocked right now, but we will block everything across the board. In Financial Services, we don’t care who you call. We don’t care why you call. We don’t care how long you talk. We don’t care in the least, as long as your bill is up to date. What you do in the privacy of your own home is no more our business than what I do in mine is your business. If at least the past due portion of your bill is paid, we have no qualms with you whatsoever. You can call anyone, and we will look the other way. If you’d like to pay that right now, you will be clear with us, and I can get you over to Fraud, where, since you paid your bill, they will most likely lift your block.”

“All right. Let’s pay that whole thing with a MasterCard right now.”
