Cousteau was a showman. He couldn’t be bothered with the time needed to make sure the equipment was sound and our gasses were pressurized properly. If there wasn’t a camera shoved up his nose, Cousteau was not interested. I continued the Man-In-Sea project without him at Villefranche, and I was going down for the first dive. Clayton found me that morning.
CLAY
Hey, Dad.
ED
Clay! How are you? I was just getting ready to dive.
CLAY
Of course you were.
LINK
I knew he was upset about something, but at the time I was completely blind to it. I should have talked to him. I should have calmed his fears, but instead I just ignored him and continued checking equipment.
CLAY
So... are you scared?
ED
No, I’m going to be fine. I’m only going down for eight hours. I have enough air to last me all night.
CLAY
In case you decide to stay down there?
ED
No, just in case anything goes wrong. I don’t want to tempt fate you know.
CLAY
What are you going to do down when you’re down there?
ED
I’ve been working on a new metal detector that can locate objects in the mud. Dr. Edgerton is going to dive down and join me. This used to be a very busy harbor in medieval times. There’s no telling what got dropped overboard. Do you need a ride to the airport tomorrow morning?
CLAY
You think you’ll be up to it?
ED
I’ll be in the decompression chamber for at least a few hours, I won’t be able to do much more than sleep.
CLAY
It doesn’t get much more personal than a ride to the airport, does it, Dad?
ED
What’s that supposed to mean?
CLAY
God forbid I get in the way of the Inventor!
ED
Clayton, stop.
CLAY
You finally found a place I couldn’t bother you, huh, Dad?
LINK
I told Marion not worry, pretend I’m at the office.
MARION
Long enough for me. I’m a mother. It’s my job to worry.
ED
It’s your job to worry about the boys. I fend for myself.
