Scene 17
EXT. FOREST
VALENTINE and POPPER are running. There is gunfire around them.
VALENTINE: I thought they were running low on ammo.
POPPER: Cooleys are dumb as shit. They’ll be happier to club us to death anyway.
VALENTINE: Are you a better clubber?
POPPER: I’m conserving my bullets. They won’t follow us past Hazard.
VALENTINE: What if they do?
POPPER: Keep climbing.
VALENTINE: Can the monsters hear us running?
POPPER: Hear you talking too.
They run.
They reach the crest of the hill. Sharp break in forest where trees have been cleared for a wide field.
POPPER: They haven’t been shooting. Maybe we lost them.
VALENTINE: Maybe they were attacked.
POPPER: We can only hope.
They walk. POPPER keeps VALENTINE in cover of trees.
POPPER: The sentry post isn’t that far.
VALENTINE: What about your compound?
POPPER: It’s just a house. It’s out of sight on the other end of the field. Hazard has a little shelter he sleeps in. At night, the other guys take turns sitting with him. (Excited.) They keep an eye on the field. We’ll be able to start growing soon. Seeds are probably sorted by now.
