Two Winters Past

INT. CASTLE GATE. AFTERNOON.

STEVE and KINO are on duty inside a small guard house. They are men of indiscriminate age, somewhere in their 20’s or 30’s. STEVE sits at a desk. KINO is looking out a window.

KINO: You hear Blythe is back?

STEVE: No shit.

KINO: Turner’s pissed. Stuck him on Front Gate. That’s who is coming to relieve you.

STEVE: I didn’t hear about a schedule change.

KINO: Keeping it quiet. Frank says Blythe stole a motorcycle from the Triangles.

CLOSEUP: STEVE. His eyes get wide with excitement.

STEVE: Can you imagine zipping around on these old backroads again? Damn, man. Fuck. I wish Blythe would hurry up then. I’m hungry.

KINO: It’s not even time yet, sit the fuck down.

STEVE: What do you think they’ve got in the commissary today?

KINO: Beans, I’m going to assume. It’s always fucking beans.

STEVE: I saw deer tracks out there, man. They’re coming back.

KINO: And those woodchuck Cooleys will have shot them all before summer.

STEVE: Fucking Cooleys… Fucking Blythe. Hurry the fuck up, my shift is over!

KINO: The man has been living feral for a month. He has to re-acclimate to clocks.

STEVE: Fuck that guy.

ROOK (OS): (Shouting.) Front Gate!

STEVE: That better be Heller.

EXT. FRONT GATE. LATE MORNING

STEVE and KINO enter from inside the guard house.

A great wooden bar locks the front gate. STEVE and KINO must work together to lift it and swing the gate open.

FRANK and RATT are outside.

STEVE: You don’t see Heller?

RATT: Cooleys been attacked. More rippers than I seen in a year. We got tell Turner.

RATT exits.

KINO: But no sign of Vince?

FRANK: We saw the Cooley place and came right back. Martin and Skells went ahead to find out more. Heller is probably inside the walls, still a lot of rippers wandering in the valley.

STEVE: Blythe says they been storing rippers for an army.

FRANK: They couldn’t have stored this many, not with all the empty barns in Marathon.

KINO: Where did they come from?

FRANK: Beats the fuck out of me man, but I ain’t seen this many in a long time.

Continued tomorrow
