Dollars Per Hour Chapter 48

“Mr. Aaron, I’m showing that you do have a balance of $305.09 on your account. It is for calls you made this month. These are valid charges.”

“No, I have a line crossed or something. I don’t make long distance calls. There is no one here but me, and I don’t make them.”

“Well, sir, I can see the calls that were made.”

“The only other person that is ever here is my girlfriend, and she doesn’t use the phone. Look, I wouldn’t lie to you. I just got out of prison. I was in there two years. I’m trying to get my life back together. I didn’t make these calls.”

“Sir, these were all made from your calling card. None of these calls were made from your house. The rates on a calling card are much higher than if you made them from your house. Did you perhaps lend your card to someone?”

“No, it must have been stolen! I don’t know who could have done it. You have to get me to your fraud department!”

“The person making the calls knows you, Sir. This is a domestic issue that our Fraud Department will do nothing about.”

“What do you mean? Do you know who stole my card?”

“No sir, but without a doubt, the person that ‘stole’ your card knows you very well.”

    “How do you know?”

“Because the three longest calls were all made to your home.”

“That’s why I think there is a repair issue or something. We have lines crossed. Someone else is making long distance calls on my line.”

“No Sir, these calls didn’t come out of your house.”

“That’s what I’m saying. Look, I have no reason to lie; I just got out of prison. I work 18 hours a day at a factory. When I get home, I just go to bed; I don’t have time to do anything. No one is ever in my house making calls when I’m not here. The only other person that’s ever even here is my girlfriend, and I don’t let her out of my sight. I have no reason to lie to you. I didn’t make those calls.”

“But you know the person who did.”

“How can you be so sure?”

“As I was telling you, these calls weren’t made from your house. Someone used your calling card to call your home, and you received them. One time, you talked for almost an hour. If someone has stolen your card, then it’s someone you know, and they are using it almost exclusively to contact you.”

“But see, I didn’t make those calls...”
