Two Winters Past

Scene 7

EXT. SUBURBAN HOUSE.

Airy suburban street. Grass has not grown in from winter, but dry stalks still show a year of unchecked growth. Toys are scattered in the yards. Zoom in on a rusty tricycle as BLYTHE exits house into shot.

Closeup of his face as he scans the yard. Sunlight illuminates his features. A broken twig captures BLYTHE’s attention. He squints to find the source.

A monster surges from behind a tree, racing across the yard for BLYTHE, who braces himself  as the monster runs up on the porch. BLYTHE chops, embedding the axe head in the monster’s neck.

BLYTHE struggles to free his weapon, but the monster is kept at arm length. BLYTHE kicks the monster in the chest, but loses his grip on the axe handle and the monster crashes through the railing into the bushes.

BLYTHE picks up a smashed board and cracks it over the monster’s head. The board shatters, but monster is only stunned a moment.

Axe still dangling from its neck, the monster leaps at BLYTHE, but he rolls it over his shoulder and scrambles onto the porch.

Monster jumps on him, but can’t maneuver around the axe in its shoulder.

As BLYTHE covers his face from fingernails, he catches the axe handle and wrenches it free, rolling monster off into the overgrowth, where it is tangled long enough for BLYTHE to chop sideways into monster’s face, destroying the ear and mouth.

Monster falls limp.

BLYTHE puts his boot on the monster’s face and pushes it off the axe handle. It rolls under the porch. BLYTHE catches his breath and checks for wounds.

Inside the house, SPIDER screams.

BLYTHE races inside.
