AIN SOPH, Part 9

Episode 14

“Oh fuck, dude! It’s Morgoth!” shouted a disembodied voice as the giant orc burst from the trees. Morgoth howled his rage and swung his axe with one hand. The first swing to connect split the wizard gorily down the middle. Morgoth's free hand knocked Sita Moon aside to clear a path to the warriors.

Both Greens were prepared, breaking off in opposite directions. The bigger warrior donned heavy armor and equipped a greatsword that roiled and sputtered witha  black fog. The tank pressed in on Morgoth to keep his attention while the other warrior backed off to ready a bow. Morgoth grabbed and chopped at the big warrior, but could not land more than a superficial strike. The swordsman was unable to break Morgoth’s defenses, but the archer was slowly weakening the orc with repeated arrows to the back.

Finally delivering a punch to the head that stunned the big warrior, Morgoth spun in one fluid motion to chop down the archer. He was just close enough to be devastating. The swordsman had not yet recovered when Morgoth returned for him. One focused chop was enough for a killing blow. The swordsman was reduced to a leaking pile of flesh and broken bone.

The archer was recovered and on his feet. He stayed out of Morgoth's reach a few seconds, arrow nocked, trying to line up a shot. He was far enough back he could sprint off when Morgoth charged, and was long lost into the trees by the time the orc ran out of momentum.

He watched after the archer a moment, before he looked back at Sita Moon. "You can't trust Greens," he said. "They are most dangerous. Come, I'll take you to Hedden, they will not dare attack you again with my escort."

Morgoth led Sita Moon along the river to a broken bridge that once spanned the water. It now hung limp on either side. “The Imperials cut the bridges to slow our advances," Morgoth said. "Thought they were smart, they did!" The orc laughed a deep belly-laugh. "Nothing faster or more buoyant than an orc looking for a fight! Last year we forded the river here and caught a platoon unaware in their camp. Killed everyone before they were even out of bed!" Morgoth pointed to the ridge of cliff on the opposite bank. "That's the straightest shot to Hedden. If you ask me, we should cross there."
