Two Winters Past

INT. BEDROOM. DAY.

MIRANDA is face-down, tied up on the bed. KAY enters, sits in a chair at the foot of the bed, watching MIRANDA.

KAY: (whispers) Are you asleep? (Pause) Vic is asleep... He’s downstairs... I’m... I'm sorry, I want you to know that... I didn’t want this, but Vic makes me do it. I can’t say no to him. He’ll kill me, or worse. I’m sorry.... I’m sorry, okay, please say something!

MIRANDA: Is that the man who killed your father?

KAY: My father traded me for food. He didn’t... I agreed, we thought Vic was nice. We walked with him for two days, and he said he would take me someplace safe.

MIRANDA: Where is your father now?

KAY: (crying) I don’t know.

VIC: (OS) Where are you?

KAY runs into the hall as VIC is stomping up stairs. He is in a rage. KAY tries to duck him, but VIC shoves her back in the room against the bed. KAY is screaming. MIRANDA says nothing.

VIC: What are you so interested in this ol’ bag for? Is it your mother? Your grandmother? How about I just do her right now and call it that?

VIC draws a knife.

KAY: No. No, you can’t. You promised me, Vic.

VIC: Don’t tell me what to do!

VIC pushes KAY down on the bed and rips her pants off.

KAY screams and cries while VIC rapes her over the top of MIRANDA. When he is done, he storms out of the room and downstairs.

KAY slides on the floor in a sobbing heap.

There is a long period of silence save for the crying. Door slams downstairs. KAY cries out.

MIRANDA: I don’t know your name.

KAY: (sobbing gives way to sniffles.) What?

MIRANDA: You told me your name is Stacy. You said that wasn’t true.

KAY: I shouldn’t be talking to you.

MIRANDA: What is your real name?

KAY: He’s going to fucking kill you, okay? I can’t stop him, I can’t talk him out of it. I don’t want you to know my name.

MIRANDA: I won’t say it. I promise.

KAY: You can call me Kay, that’s close enough.

MIRANDA: There’s a hatchet in the basement. Wait until he’s asleep and hit him in the face. You might have to do it twice.

KAY: Where do I go then?

MIRANDA: You can stay here. My son can take you someplace safe after he’s taken care of the sick people.

KAY: You would let me stay here with you?

MIRANDA: As long as you like. I can help you kill him. I’ve done it before.
