“All right, Ms. Hill, let me just enter this and I’ll get you an approval code for this transaction.”
“Rubin, do you mind if I ask you a personal question?”
“Well, I don’t really like to give out personal information, but go ahead. If it’s not too bad, I’ll answer it. By the way, Ms. Hill, your transaction approval code is 544121.”
“Are you white or black?”
“...Excuse me?”
“I was just wondering if you were white or black.”
“...I don’t see how that could possibly pertain to our conversation about your phone bill, so I’m going to choose not to answer that.”
“It’s okay, you can answer it. No one will mind. If your bosses say anything, just tell them I made you tell me.”
“I’d rather just not answer, that’s all.”
“Are you embarrassed about your race?”
“I don’t like to give out that kind of information about myself.”
“I was just wondering, because you have a very nice voice. I figured you must be black. White people don’t usually have voices as nice as yours.”
“Well, ma’am, you can go ahead and think of me as whatever you want; that’s why I don’t like to give out information like that.”
