“How dare you turn off my phone today? My letter said I had another two weeks!”
“No, it didn’t Ma’am. I’m showing it was actually scheduled to be suspended three days ago. It does take time to process though.”
“That’s not what my letter says.”
“It is.”
“It says I would be turned off in two weeks.”
“Do you have the letter there?”
“Yes I do!”
“Read what it says to me.”
“It says that final disconnection will occur on...”
“Your line isn’t disconnected...”
“Yes it is!”
“No, no, Ma’am, it isn’t, please allow me to explain. Your line is suspended. Final disconnection means that we’ve gotten rid of it. We’ve cancelled your account and you are no longer a SpectraCom customer. To get your service again, you have to pay your balance in full and set up a new account. Quite often, it involves getting a whole new phone number. Now, with local suspension, which is what happened to your line, it means we have temporarily interrupted your dial tone, and you are unable to make any calls other than emergency calls and 1-800 numbers. As soon as you make a sufficient payment to cover basic requirements, your line is restored, and everything stays the same. Read to me what your letter says about suspension.”
“It doesn’t say anything!”
“It does.”
“No, there is nothing.”
“Ma’am, I have a copy of the letter in front of me. I can see what it says.”
“Well, you must have a different one, because mine says nothing.”
“Ma’am, humor me. Please read the first sentence of the letter to me.”
“...‘As of the date of this letter, your local service has been suspended, in that your dial tone has been temporarily interrupted, preventing you from making any calls other than emergency calls...”
